![]() Argonne National Laboratory has been working on the development of non-tracking concentrators for high temperature operation. ![]() All four systems use diurnal tracking and have the reflecting surfaces exposed to the elements. Three additional concepts for the remaining area have been selected-a fixed mirror-moving receiver more » system, fixed receiver-moving reflector slats, and a two-axis tracking parabolic dish. At present a portion of the area is installed as E-W oriented linear parabolic troughs. The thermal energy for the facility is to be provided by a large (approximately 800 m/sup 2/) concentrating collector field. A Rankine cycle turbine, generator, controls, thermal storage, and air conditioning equipment have been installed and checked out. Sandia Laboratories has responsibility for the evaluation of concentrating collectors in a total energy test bed. The results of a conceptual design of a nontracking collector for a solar total energy system are described. Information on environmental and maintenance effects was found to be insufficient to permit specific recommendations for operating and maintenance procedures, but the available information is compiled and reported and does contain procedures that other workers have found useful. A survey data base was established on the effect of environmental exposure on the optical degradation of mirrors and lenses. The models and more » computer program are provided along with a user's manual. Results for the 11 concentrators are presented in graphic form. Mathematical models were developed for each design and incorporated into a Monte Carlo ray trace computer program to carry out detailed calculations. ![]() To assess the importance of surface accuracy on optical performance, 11 tracking and nontracking concentrator designs were selected for detailed evaluation. The study addresses two important issues: the accuracy of reflective or refractive surfaces required to achieve specified performance goals, and the effect of environmental exposure on the performance concentrators. (WHK) « lessĪn investigation of the optical performance of a variety of concentrating solar collectors is reported. The second task involves the expansion of an existing data base on mirror degradation due to environmental exposure and the collection of similar information on lenses. Optical quality properties, structural deformations due to loading and stress, tracking errors and material property changes due to the environment will be included in this assessment of performance. These models will be incorporated into existing ray trace software and will be used to evaluate concentrator performance. Ten collector configurations have been selected to be mathematically modeled. Within this task, Honeywell has conducted a survey of the literature, solar manufacturers and government information to obtain data on existing concentrator designs (i.e., V-troughs, parabolic mirror concentrators) and lens and mirror materials. The first task involves investigation and evaluation of concentrator performance. To further investigate these errors, Honeywell is performing a study of concentrator designs and mirror more » and lens surfaces. When data is available on surface quality, mirror or lens optical characteristics, surface deformations due to stress and other errors, it is difficult to quantify the effect these have on a particular concentrator design performance. In many instances, this type of data has not been compiled.
